Retirement Celebration for Captain Dennis Matheny
Captain Dennis Matheny served the Forest City Fire Department for 34 years, beginning at the age of 18. He turned career at age 21.
Captain Matheny served the department and his community well. He served with a servant's heart, giving thousands of hours to help the citizens of Forest City, the extended community and his fellow firefighters in Rutherford County.
Captain Matheny was the leading force in organizing the Rutherford County Firefighters'
Honor Guard. The honor guard has performed in Washington, DC NC at the Fallen Firefighters' Memorial Services, as well as numerous places across North Carolina. Most recently, they performed at the memorial service for our past Insurance Commissioner, Jim Long.
Captain Matheny began the fire department's Aluminum Can Drive which raises funds for the burned children of North Carolina and burn victims of our county.
Because of the efforts of Captain Matheny, hundreds of pints of blood have been collected during quarterly blood drives held at the Forest City Fire Department. Matheny has scheduled, promoted and enthusiastically orchestrated this successful community effort for the last nine years.
Captain Matheny has a heart for children. He is a mentor for young children and, in our opinion is an outstanding role model.
On several occasions, Captain Matheny has been recognized by his peers, by being awarded the prestigious title of Firefighter of the Year. He has also served as president of the Rutherford County Firefighters' Association.
Captain Matheny leaves the department with our very best wishes and our gratitude for his years of exceptional service to the department. He leaves the town with big boots to fill as he carries his life's motto "give more than you receive" into the challenging years of his retirement.
God's speed Dennis. You will be missed. |
