PARKS AND RECREATION MAINTENANCE WORKER

The Town of Forest City is accepting applications for a Maintenance Worker in the Parks and Recreation Department.

Applications will be accepted at City Hall, 128 North Powell Street and via email HR@townofforestcity.com beginning Thursday, March 5, 2026 until filled.

This position performs manual work including but not limited to, mowing and maintains grounds around Town parks and open areas, and prunes trees and shrubbery, plants, waters, seeds and fertilizes grass, trees, flowers and shrubbery.
Assists with maintenance and repair of ballfields and grounds; maintains irrigation systems, digs trenches for water lines and, lays lines, and covers and packs down with dirt; repairs or replace sprinkler heads. Drives truck to and from work sites; hauls supplies, equipment and materials and picks up plants. Works lines and drags ball fields during playing seasons. Assists in the removal of leaves and mulching of plant and flower beds; rakes leaves. Operates a variety of equipment power tools, lawn mowers, chain saws, weed eaters, sprayers, and hand saws, operates a riding mower, performs routine landscape maintenance, and cleans storm water catch basins.  Additionally operating a zero-turn riding and/or a push mower to mow Town rights of way, cemeteries and other property.

Applicant must have a high school diploma and experience in maintenance work or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Applicant must have physical stamina to perform the work and a valid NC driver’s license.

Successful applicant must pass drug test and criminal background check prior to employment.

Hiring salary for this position will begin at $34,064.00.

PLANNER/SR. PLANNER

(depending on experience)

The Town of Forest City is seeking a motivated professional to serve as Planner, who will function as the Town’s Planning and Zoning Director. The Town is experiencing steady residential and commercial growth and is actively investing in community development, infrastructure, and downtown revitalization. This position offers the opportunity to play an important role in guiding development, shaping land use decisions, and supporting long-range planning initiatives and strategic investments in a growing community in western North Carolina. In addition to administering zoning and development regulations, the Planner will assist the Town Manager and various departments with long-range planning and grant writing/management related to community development and infrastructure projects. 

 

The Planner performs professional planning and zoning duties related to the administration and enforcement of the Town’s Unified Development Ordinance (UDO), zoning regulations, subdivision regulations, floodplain management, stormwater requirements, and other land development standards.

The position reviews development proposals, interprets zoning regulations, and assists developers, property owners, and the public with land use and permitting questions. Responsibilities include reviewing site plans and subdivisions, conducting planning research and analysis, preparing staff reports and recommendations, and coordinating meetings of the Board of Planning and Adjustment. The Planner will also present planning recommendations and development proposals to the Town Council when necessary.

Key Responsibilities

  • Administer and enforce the Town’s Unified Development Ordinance (UDO)
  • Review development proposals including site plans, rezonings, and subdivisions
  • Provide zoning and land use guidance to the public and development community
  • Prepare staff reports and recommendations for the Board of Planning & Adjustment and Town Council
  • Maintain zoning and development records within SmartGov and GIS systems
  • Conduct planning research and policy analysis
  • Assist with long-range planning initiatives and community development strategies

The applicant must possess a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in planning, public administration, or a closely related field, and some professional planning experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The preferred candidate will have one or more years of municipal planning experience, Certified Zoning Official (CZO) certification or the ability to obtain within six months, and experience with GIS systems and development review software. The successful applicant must pass a criminal background check and pre-employment drug screening.

The salary range for this position is $59,717 – $87,390 depending on qualifications and experience.

SEASONAL MAINTENANCE WORKER (STREET DEPT.)

The Town of Forest City is accepting applications for a Seasonal Maintenance Worker in the Street Department.

Applications will be accepted at City Hall, 128 North Powell Street and via email HR@townofforestcity.com beginning Tuesday, March 3, 2026 until filled.

This position performs manual work in the collection of yard/household waste, operates a leaf vacuum and woodchipper, operates a riding mower, performs routine landscape maintenance, and cleans storm water catch basins.  This position requires both driving and riding in a dump truck loading limbs, debris, furniture and appliances along Town rights of way. Additionally operating a zero-turn riding and/or a push mower to mow Town rights of way, cemeteries and other property. May also be assigned manual tasks as weed trimming, edging and installation of holiday ornaments at the direction of the Public Services Director.

Applicant must have a high school diploma, and physical stamina to perform the work and a valid driver’s license.

Successful applicant must pass drug test and criminal background check prior to employment.

Hourly rate for this position is $12.50. The position is seasonal and will work 40 hours per week, no benefits.

POLICE OFFICER

The Town of Forest City is accepting applications for the position of police officer with a minimum starting salary of $51,765.48. Salary consideration will be based on experience. Additional benefits include: Prudential NC401K with a 5% employer contribution, death and disability income with Hartford Life Company, membership into the NC Retirement System, State Employees Health Plan/provided to the employee at no cost, 12 paid holidays per year. Lateral new hires may transfer accumulated sick leave.

Preferred applicants will have a good knowledge of modern police practices, laws relating to arrest, search and seizure, apprehension of criminals and traffic control. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must: possess NC General Law Enforcement Certification, high school diploma/GED, have no felony convictions and a valid NC class “C” driver’s license. Prior to employment, applicants must successfully complete a physical/drug screen examination, psychological, polygraph and extensive background investigation.
