This position performs a variety of skilled work locating water and sewer lines. Work involves the operation of construction equipment in the installation, replacement and repair of water and sewer pipes to specific grade and depth, and back filling and compacting the site. Work also includes making taps to water and sewer mains, installing hydrants, meters, and valves, reading meters, and making repairs to the water and sewer system. Position is subject to working in both inside and outside environments, in extreme hot and cold weather, and exposure to various hazards such as loud noises, vibration, moving mechanical parts, electrical current, chemicals, fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, poor ventilation, and oils. Work is also subject to the final standards of OSHA on blood borne pathogens. The position is subject to on-call and call-back work.
The position calls for a well-qualified applicant to maintain asset management software and mapping system. This work requires maintaining, editing, and creating new maps for all infrastructure needs. Knowledge of operation and appropriate usage of equipment; basic map reading; utility locating practices and procedures; GIS; GPS; GPR (ground penetrating radar); principles of customer service; basic mathematical principles; and equipment including computers and handheld mobile devices.
Applicant must have a high school diploma, and experience in locating utility lines is preferred. Hiring salary for this position starts at $44,779.00, with potential adjustments based on experience and qualifications.

The Town of Forest City is accepting applications for a Maintenance Worker in the Parks and Recreation Department.

This position performs a variety of tasks involving semi-skilled equipment operation and landscaping tasks in the maintenance of Town parks and recreation properties, primarily at the golf course. This position performs manual work including but not limited to, mowing and maintaining grounds around Town parks and open areas, and prunes trees and shrubbery, plants, waters, seeds and fertilizes grass, trees, flowers and shrubbery. Assists with maintenance and repair of ballfields and grounds; maintains irrigation systems, digs trenches for water lines and, lays lines, and covers and packs down with dirt; repairs or replace sprinkler heads. Drives truck to and from work sites; hauls supplies, equipment and materials and picks up plants. Works lines and drags ball fields during playing seasons. Assists in the removal of leaves and mulching of plant and flower beds, rakes leaves. Operates a variety of equipment power tools, lawn mowers, chain saws, weed eaters, sprayers, and hand saws, operates a riding mower, performs routine landscape maintenance, and cleans storm water catch basins. Additionally operating a zero-turn riding and/or a push mower to mow Town rights of way, cemeteries and other property.
Employees must be able to perform manual labor and semi-skilled duties and abide by safety rules and regulations. Work subjects the employee to inside and outside environmental conditions, noise, vibration, hazards associated with maintenance work, fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, and oils. Duties may also expose the employee to human body fluids and thus the work is subject to the OSHA requirements on blood borne pathogens.
Applicant must have a high school diploma and considerable experience in maintenance work or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The applicant should have a pesticide license or must be willing to obtain pesticide license within 12 months of employment. Applicant must have physical stamina to perform the work and a valid NC driver’s license.

The Town of Forest City is accepting applications for a Firefighter/EMT.

An employee in this class participates in the operations of fire suppression, fire education and prevention, technical rescue, emergency medical and other incident response operations at the fire station. Employees work on a 24-hour shift and participate as part of a team in the maintenance of facilities, equipment, and apparatus. The employee is subject to the hazards associated with incidence response work including working in inside and outside environments, in extreme hot and cold temperatures, loud noise, vibration, moving parts, high heat, chemicals, fumes, odors, dust, gases, poor ventilation, oils, wearing respirators, and working in close quarters. The employee is also subject to the final OSHA standards on blood borne pathogens.
Job duties include but are not limited to:
- Responds to emergency scenes; performs basic firefighting functions including basic life support, CPR, and first aid; connects hoses to hydrants and applies water or chemicals to fire; operates portable fire extinguishers to combat small fires; forces entry into burning structures and searches for and rescues occupants.
- Responds to emergency medical calls and performs duties in accordance with applicable state and federal laws, local ordinances, established policies, procedures and protocols, and within established chain of command; refers to policy manuals as necessary.
- Assesses and evaluates situation at scenes of emergency response; surveys and secures scene, requesting additional assistance, as necessary; determines mechanism of injury and equipment needed to effect rescue and initiation of treatment.
- Responds to incidents of multiple casualties in accordance with established disaster response plans; recognizes need for hazardous material response personnel and calls for assistance accordingly; performs in accordance with established protocols for handling patients exposed to hazardous materials, including use of hazardous materials response kit.
- Participates in routine preventive maintenance of equipment including checking and filling self-contained breathing apparatus, washing/waxing trucks, checking batteries, fuel and oil levels, cleaning and drying hose, inspecting hose and hose connections for damage and wear; maintains fire station by sweeping, mopping, painting, washing windows and other tasks.
- Performs daily apparatus checks, which includes checking the pump, lights, warning devices, and generator on the apparatus.
- Performs daily equipment checks, which include checking saws, portable combination tool, water cooler, portable fan, Air packs with spare bottles, all gas monitors and thermal imagining camera.
- Performs yard maintenance on a weekly basis which includes edging on sidewalks and around bushes with a weed eater and using push and riding lawn mowers to cut grass around the station.
- Conducts fire prevention education demonstrate use of fire extinguishers and smoke detectors; helps develop escape plans; installs child safety seats for citizens with children.
- Conducts tours of the fire station and perform public demonstrations at schools, community meetings, and other locations.
- Participates in continuous firefighter and emergency medical technician training program to improve competence.
- Performs other related job duties as assigned.

Preferred applicants shall have an NC Firefighter Level II certification and NC EMT Basic certification or obtain within 6 months of hire.

The Town of Forest City is accepting applications for the position of police officer with a minimum starting salary of $51,765.48.
Salary consideration will be based on experience.
