The Town of Forest City is accepting applications for a Firefighter/EMT.
Applications and applicable certifications will be accepted at City Hall, 128 North Powell Street and via email HR@townofforestcity.com beginning Tuesday, June 16, 2026 until filled.
An employee in this class participates in the operations of fire suppression, fire education and prevention, technical rescue, emergency medical and other incident response operations at the fire station. Employees work on a 24-hour shift and participate as part of a team in the maintenance of facilities, equipment, and apparatus. The employee is subject to the hazards associated with incidence response work including working in inside and outside environments, in extreme hot and cold temperatures, loud noise, vibration, moving parts, high heat, chemicals, fumes, odors, dust, gases, poor ventilation, oils, wearing respirators, and working in close quarters. The employee is also subject to the final OSHA standards on blood borne pathogens.
Job duties include but are not limited to:
- Responds to emergency scenes; performs basic firefighting functions including basic life support, CPR, and first aid; connects hoses to hydrants and applies water or chemicals to fire; operates portable fire extinguishers to combat small fires; forces entry into burning structures and searches for and rescues occupants.
- Responds to emergency medical calls and performs duties in accordance with applicable state and federal laws, local ordinances, established policies, procedures and protocols, and within established chain of command; refers to policy manuals as necessary.
- Assesses and evaluates situation at scenes of emergency response; surveys and secures scene, requesting additional assistance, as necessary; determines mechanism of injury and equipment needed to effect rescue and initiation of treatment.
- Responds to incidents of multiple casualties in accordance with established disaster response plans; recognizes need for hazardous material response personnel and calls for assistance accordingly; performs in accordance with established protocols for handling patients exposed to hazardous materials, including use of hazardous materials response kit.
- Participates in routine preventive maintenance of equipment including checking and filling self-contained breathing apparatus, washing/waxing trucks, checking batteries, fuel and oil levels, cleaning and drying hose, inspecting hose and hose connections for damage and wear; maintains fire station by sweeping, mopping, painting, washing windows and other tasks.
- Performs daily apparatus checks, which includes checking the pump, lights, warning devices, and generator on the apparatus.
- Performs daily equipment checks, which include checking saws, portable combination tool, water cooler, portable fan, Air packs with spare bottles, all gas monitors and thermal imagining camera.
- Performs yard maintenance on a weekly basis which includes edging on sidewalks and around bushes with a weed eater and using push and riding lawn mowers to cut grass around the station.
- Conducts fire prevention education demonstrate use of fire extinguishers and smoke detectors; helps develop escape plans; installs child safety seats for citizens with children.
- Conducts tours of the fire station and perform public demonstrations at schools, community meetings, and other locations.
- Participates in continuous firefighter and emergency medical technician training program to improve competence.
- Performs other related job duties as assigned.
Applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent. Applicants must have a valid NC Driver’s License. Must have valid Class B CDL or obtain within 6 months of hire. Preferred applicants shall have an NC Firefighter Level II certification and NC EMT Basic certification or obtain within 6 months of hire.
Successful applicants must pass a physical/agility examination, drug test and criminal background check prior to employment. Hiring salary for this position starts at $47,018.47.

The Town of Forest City is accepting applications for the position of police officer with a minimum starting salary of $51,765.48.
Salary consideration will be based on experience. Additional benefits include: Prudential NC401K with a 5% employer contribution, death and disability income with Hartford Life Company, membership into the NC Retirement System, State Employees Health Plan/provided to the employee at no cost, 12 paid holidays per year. Lateral new hires may transfer accumulated sick leave.
Preferred applicants will have a good knowledge of modern police practices, laws relating to arrest, search and seizure, apprehension of criminals and traffic control. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must: possess NC General Law Enforcement Certification, high school diploma/GED, have no felony convictions and a valid NC class “C” driver’s license. The Town of Forest City is accepting applications for an Administrative Specialist working in the Public Works Department.

This position performs a variety of administrative support, office management, records processing, data entry, customer service, operation of fork-lift, and janitorial duties. The employee supports a department with diverse operations or may support more than one department. Work includes greeting the public and answering questions and relaying information, typing or data entry work, and creating and maintaining accurate inventory, files and records. The employee is expected to have a good understanding of the department and/or the Town and its services to respond to inquiries, including some technical knowledge about departmental policies and procedures. Work involves considerable independence, self-initiative, and knowledge of office operations in handling certain activities such as information processing and creating office management systems. Work may require some technical knowledge to effectively conduct the work or aid in specific areas. Customer service duties require courtesy, tact and some independence of action particularly when encountering sensitive or confidential matters. Work includes the use of modern office technology including word processing, database, spreadsheet, presentation and/or specialized software. Work involves the ability to operate a forklift to unload and move materials. Work is performed under the supervision of the department head and is evaluated through observation, conferences, quality and effectiveness of the work completed and feedback from customers. Applicant must be able to perform sedentary work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. The position is subject to call-back work.
Applicant must have a high school diploma with considerable administrative/clerical support experience involving strong customer service, and office technology skills. Some experience in unskilled maintenance/janitorial work. Applicant must possess valid driver’s license.
