Forest City, NC – On Thursday, September 11, Forest City Fire Rescue held the 24th Annual 9/11 Memorial Ceremony at the Pavilion on Park Square (POPS) honoring the lives lost, the brave heroes and first responders, and the strength of a nation after the attacks on September 11, 2001.
The ceremony began at 8:30 AM with an emergency vehicle display, followed by commemorative music at 9:00 AM. Town Manager Janet Mason welcomed attendees at 10:00 AM. R-S Central High School’s JROTC followed Dr. Mason’s welcome with the Posting of the Colors. Sarah Crank performed the National Anthem, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance led by Fire Chief Billy Samuel.
Following the Pledge of Allegiance, Samuel introduced this year’s special guest, Sergeant Kristopher (Kris) Benson. Born and raised in Columbus, Ohio, Sgt. Benson was sworn into the United States Marine Corps on October 15, 2001. In his four years of dedicated military service, Sgt. Benson served two deployments in Iraq and received numerous awards and recognitions, including the Purple Heart Medal, 2x Navy Marine Achievement Medal, and Global War on Terrorism Service Medal. In his speech, Sgt. Benson reflected on his military service, noting that the attacks on September 11 were his call to action. He spoke about the world before and after the attacks.
Doug Jackson read his original poems; heartfelt tributes honoring the selflessness of our first responders and their commitment to protect and serve.
The memorial ceremony concluded with the Ringing of the Bell by Dennis Matheny and Dwayne Craig. Chris Bucy offered the closing prayer, followed by the emergency vehicle procession through downtown Forest City.
Forest City Fire Rescue is proud to continue the tradition of honoring the memory of September 11, 2001, with reflection, gratitude, and respect for those who served and sacrificed.
